This story can be, to say the least, off-putting to a everyday reader. I understand I was chucked by the seemingly inexplicable habit of Lenny and the nameless female leading part. To focus especially on the narratological aspects of this work, it is a highly frenetic and multi-faceted piece, where Lenny's sharp, staccato chat only happens in short bursts, rapid-fire like one of the weapons he utilized in the Mekong Delta; by comparison, the narrator has lengthy, flowery, vivid descriptive passages that are all around with sources to color and flowers.
