1 . INTRODUCTION

Organisations worldwide are currently facing increasing competition, price stresses and reduced growth rates and in order to be successful, for many organisations, this requests the need to constantly change to survive. Having the proper employee fit-for-purpose is crucial to the success of an company faced with this sort of challenges. The application of psychological examination is a important enabler to get the appropriate selection and development of employees at work to meet the changes in the internal and external economic and social environment (Bartram, 2004; Paterson & Uys, 2005). However , the type and benefit of modern day psychological examination needs to be examined as it confronts many problems, particularly within a South Africa context that may be influenced simply by political injustices of the previous. Psychological evaluation use in S. africa currently faces many issues including the version of tests in a multicultural context, dialect, age and gender boundaries and other dimension challenges (Foxcroft, 2004; Foxcroft, 2006). These types of challenges present criticism of the fairness and ethical practices of mental assessment and highlight the advantages of enhancing fairness in assessment and developing equitable and unbiased psychological tests (Foxcroft, 2011; Paterson & Uys, 2005). To be able to respond to these kinds of challenges, it is crucial to gain an awareness of how emotional assessments have developed over the years to ensure that meaningful improvements can be manufactured ((Foxcroft, Roodt & Abrahams, 2005).

It is important to reflect on the history and development of mental assessment mainly because it helps describe how and why it is currently utilized, it enables critical analysis of psychological assessment, figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of tests employed today and offers lessons to become learned in the weaknesses and injustices of past assessment practices so that psychologists can develop new evaluation tools and techniques and be sure fair and ethical social practices of psychological analysis (Gregory, 2k; Moerdyk, 2009).
