Edgar Allen Poe's short story " The Cask of Amontillado” is a complex story under the relationship involving the two character types that finally ends together with the murder of Fortunato. Poe uses imagery and the placing of the history to shock the reader together with the gruesome stopping, however even more analysis with the symbols in the story makes it evident the final outcome was unavoidable. Poe's usage of symbolism shows the revenge individuals can seek after they feel like they have been betrayed. The Amontillado is a key image in this brief story since it is the means to the manipulation and the method Montresor fidele his payback.
