Rhetorical Analysis

In Barbara Ehrenreich's Social baggage, the main topic of ethnic heritage is discussed as the author is responding to an acquaintance requesting her what her ethnic background is usually. Ehrenreich finds her purpose for writing her essay in making visitors aware that simply no ethnic backdrop is in fact a background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most people pride themselves in where they came from plus the traditions with their culture, instead of feeling nearly embarrassed to say their background.

Ehrenreich claims that she has simply no ethnic history, disregarding her Scottish, English, and Irish heritage. While some " stand up and happily reclaim their very own roots”, Ehrenreich questions in the event that she is " revealing a hidden ethnic chauvinism in which the Britanically derived function as a kind of natural standard compared with the cultural " others”'. She realizes that it is nearly " un-American” to not become linked in title to a ancestor of the particular ethnicity, yet she hardly provides any feeling of take great pride in in her personal qualifications or even a connection to any other history due to staying raised which has a of absence cultural customs and beliefs. There was a period of time where Ehrenreich " in short , nourished a craving intended for traditions and roots”, because so many people carry out at some point, by learning about where her relatives descended by and the procedures that her ancestors took part in. She also hoped that with her marriage to an Eastern Western european Jewish person, she would gain the " ethnic genes” that the lady felt your woman lacked. The girl attempted to transfuse a greater perception of ethnic pride in her kids than what she had growing up, but their sense of connection with their own ethnicity " eluded” all of them as well. Ehrenreich portrays a top sense of disconnect by her origins, so much so the fact that reader feels sympathetic that she is being unable to achieve the ethnic pride that many do.
