" We have always been an outsider; a displaced person. " Alice Hoffman. At one time or another people have been with the fringe of culture in some way: an outcast in high school, a stranger in a foreign country, the best by something, the worst for something, the main one who's diverse. Truly being an outsider is definitely the one thing many of us have in common and have experienced this one way or another. Throughout the character of Lily, a white Ethiopian woman, Camille Gibbs weaves a rich tapestry for struggles of an outsider in her book Sweetness inside the belly. Because an incomer Lily problems to achieve a feeling of belonging, and feels remote from her roots. However being an incomer allows Lily to explore whom she is as an individual and her trust and the practice of Islam is what binds Lily with her Ethiopian traditions. As a child, Lily always experienced out of place, a great outsider. Your woman was born to restless British parents who would cart her around the world, by no means staying anywhere long enough to set down origins. She experienced as if her parents never truly wanted her, she was just something that they had to get along. In Harar the adapted nation she grew in, Lily was tagged a " ferenji" (foreigner). " snotty nosed children who happened to run up and touched me shouting " Ferenji! Ferenji" (51). Despite the fact that Lily worked very hard to adjust to the Ethiopian culture, which she did, people hardly ever truly comprehended her, and always misjudged her. Despite knowing her religious beliefs Islam really well, she was never really appreciated for whom she was. She was always misjudged because of her " white" color. " We do not find out our Islam from farenjis! These people happen to be useless! Liars! Thieves! " (211). Lily wasn't appreciated much working in london (from in which she at first was) both. Although her white pores and skin gave her authority in the country, society fully never acknowledged her, mainly because Lily was still being set to Ethiopian culture, and struggled to adapt to the English life style.
